Gartang Gali Trek: An Ancient Route in the Uttarakhand Himalayas

The Gartang Gali Trek is 90 km from Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand. This old route was made by cutting through huge mountains and is known as Gartang Gali. Built 150 years ago, it once connected China and the Barhat Market in Uttarkashi. The trek closed in 1962 after the Indo-China War but reopened for trekkers and locals on August 20th.

Legend says Pathans built this 150-year-old bridge at 11,000 feet in Uttarkashi’s Gangotri area. Now it’s a reopened trek for adventure lovers!

Before independence, people from Uttarkashi built a trade route via Nelong Valley to Tibet. This trek along the Gangotri National Highway was created by cutting steep rocks near Bhairon Ghati and laying iron rods and wood. Goods like wool, leather, and salt were transported from Tibet to Uttarkashi through this route. The bridge offers stunning views of the Nelong Valley.

The 150-meter-long stairs of Gartang Gali have been renovated. Hike history! 11,000-foot stairs reopen for trekkers, but limited to 10 people at a time.
